Büyükelçinin Mesajı
Dear Fellow Citizens and Lithuanian Friends,
The “Treaty of Friendship” that is the bedrock of diplomatic relations between Türkiye and Lithuania was signed in 1930. The first article of this historic agreement stipulates that there will be “…inviolable peace as well as sincere and perpetual friendship between our Republics”.
We have honored our commitment since then. Türkiye never recognized the occupation and annexation of independent Lithuania in 1940 by the Soviet Union, and after the restoration of independence, Vilnius was the first capital in the Baltic region where Turkish diplomats returned.
Our relationship certainly goes further back. From the 14th century, in that often challenging part of Europe, Turks and Lithuanians met each other, became friends and laid the foundations of our partnership. Lithuanian Tatar and Karaite communities testify to the depth of the historic ties bringing our countries closer.
Today, as strong NATO allies and close friends, we enjoy excellent bilateral relations based on trust, share values and mutual respect.
However, there is no time for complacency. We have so much more room to further strengthen our ties. Together with my colleagues, we will continue to work to add value to our already flourishing bilateral agenda in every possible field. From trade to education, from defense industry to energy, from tourism to innovation, we are eager to build further to the benefit of our nations.
Serving and supporting Turkish citizens, students and businesspersons living in Lithuania will also be among our priorities.
There is no doubt that in the face of common threats and challenges, but also new opportunities, we should make our strong bonds of friendship and alliance ever stronger, and continue to work together and stand shoulder to shoulder to tackle many complicated regional and international risks.
In this regard, 2023 is a highly symbolic year. We are celebrating the centenary of the founding of the Republic of Türkiye, and the 500th anniversary of the establishment of the Turkish Foreign Service. 2023 is also the 700th anniversary of Vilnius where NATO Heads of State and Government met in July.
I have assumed my duties as of February 1st, 2023 and presented my Letters of Credence on February 6. It is an honor for me to serve as the Ambassador of the Republic of Türkiye to Lithuania at such a critical juncture and to contribute to the next chapter of our relations.
Needless to say, our Embassy’s doors will always remain open to our fellow citizens and Lithuanian friends alike.
I convey my warmest regards and best wishes to you all.
G. Barış Tantekin
Ambassador
